Scheduling with present bias

چکیده

Abstract The study of time‐inconsistent decision‐making, in particular present bias, has greatly influenced the field behavioral economics over last two decades. Moreover, it resulted design and implementation widely used incentive schemes for various important applications. However, effect bias on decision‐making operational problems been studied less. This work considers a simple scheduling system that requires decisions about project timing sequencing. We algorithms enable optimization revenue less cost under both naive sophisticated (i.e., self‐aware) decision‐makers. describe managerial insights relative performance time‐consistent, naive, decision‐makers, how to mitigate effects bias. Both theoretical computational results support these insights.

Optimal Income Taxation with Present Bias

Work often requires up-front costs in exchange for delayed benefits—one must search for a job before becoming employed, paychecks are typically delayed by a few weeks, and a promotion may come only after months or years of extra effort—and mounting evidence documents present bias over labor supply in the face of such delays. This paper studies the implications of such present bias for the optim...

Project Scheduling with Simultaneous Optimization, Time, Net Present Value, and Project Flexibility for Multimode Activities with Constrained Renewable Resources

Project success is assessed based on various criteria, every one of which enjoys a different level of importance for the beneficiaries and decision makers. Time and cost are the most important objectives and criteria for the project success. On the other hand, reducing the risk of finishing activities until the predetermined deadlines should be taken into account. Having formulated the problem ...

Does a present bias influence exploratory choice?

Balancing exploration and exploitation is difficult, and across a wide variety of situations under-exploration of uncertain alternatives appears prevalent. We propose that one possible cause of under-exploration is present bias, whereby immediate rewards (like those gained from exploitation) loom larger than future rewards (like those gained from exploration). This possible cause of under-explo...

Computer scheduling algorithms: Past, present and future

Efficient scheduling techniques of computing resources are essential for achieving satisfactory performance for users as computer systems and their applications become more complex. In this paper, we survey research on scheduling algorithms, review previous classifications of scheduling problems, and present a broader classification scheme. Using a uniform terminology for scheduling strategies ...

Net Present Value of Cash Flows in Single Machine and Flow Shop Scheduling Problems

While a great portion of the scheduling literature focuses on time-based criteria, the most important goal of management is maximizing the profitability of the firm. In this paper, the net preset value criterion is studied taking account of linear time-dependent cash flows in single machine and flow shop scheduling problems. First, a heuristic method is presented for the single machine scheduli...
